Education without limits

Teaching and learning at Rugby School has always been distinctive.

At its heart is a simple idea: that education is not only about passing examinations, but about developing the habits of thought that allow young people to think independently, to question, and to engage with the world around them

At Rugby School Hanoi, this approach is introduced from the earliest years. Children are encouraged to become curious, reflective, and confident in their learning, developing both the foundations of knowledge and the ability to use it with purpose.

The Rugby Way

Passing exams is only one aspect of education.

At Rugby School, we want pupils to develop a deep understanding of the subjects they study, to think critically, and to have the confidence to express their ideas and respond to challenge

Lessons are not passive. They are shaped by discussion, questioning, and shared enquiry, where pupils learn to organise their thoughts, test their understanding, and engage with different perspectives.

This culture begins early. Even in Pre-Prep, children are encouraged to ask questions, to explore ideas, and to see learning as something active rather than something delivered.

A broad and balanced curriculum

Rugby School Hanoi follows the National Curriculum of England, adapted to provide a broad, balanced, and engaging educational experience for an international context. This leads to the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) for the final two years of the Senior School.

From the earliest years, the curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop strong foundations in literacy and numeracy
  • Encourage intellectual curiosity and creativity
  • Build independence and confidence in learning
  • Prepare pupils for future academic pathways, including IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate

Learning is carefully structured to ensure continuity and progression, allowing pupils to move confidently from one stage of their education to the next.

The early years

In the Early Years, learning is shaped through a rich, play-based curriculum that supports children’s physical, social, emotional, and linguistic development

Children develop their understanding through themes, exploration, and interaction, while building the essential skills that underpin future learning.

Particular emphasis is placed on:

Communication and language
Personal, social, and emotional development
Physical development

Alongside these, children begin to engage with early literacy, mathematics, and creative expression.

Each child is recognised as an individual, learning at their own pace within an environment that supports both confidence and independence.

Pre-prep: building foundations

In Years 1 and 2, pupils begin the Key Stage 1 curriculum, while retaining the strengths of Early Years practice.

Learning becomes gradually more structured, but remains creative and interconnected. Subjects such as English, mathematics, and science are introduced alongside history, geography, the arts, and computing, allowing pupils to develop a broad understanding of the world

Themes and questions often connect learning across subjects. Pupils might explore whether life could exist beyond Earth, or how people and places are connected, encouraging them to think beyond individual disciplines.

During this stage, pupils begin to secure key skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, while also developing independence, confidence, and the ability to reflect on their own learning.

Language and global perspective

Rugby School Hanoi is an international school, shaped by both its British foundation and its local context.

All teaching is delivered in English, with additional provision for Vietnamese language and culture. Alongside this, pupils are introduced to German language and cultural experiences, reflecting the school’s wider international outlook and partnerships

This combination allows pupils to develop both strong academic language skills and a broader global perspective from an early age.

Learning beyond the classroom

We believe that learning outside the classroom is as important as learning within it.

Across the school, pupils will take part in a wide range of experiences that extend their understanding and develop their interests. These include creative activities, physical education, performance, and opportunities for exploration beyond the immediate curriculum

Even in the earliest years, these experiences are carefully introduced, allowing children to build confidence while discovering new areas of interest.

The development of independent learners

A central aim of a Rugby education is to develop independence.

Pupils are gradually encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, to reflect on their progress, and to approach challenges with resilience. Teachers provide guidance and structure, but also create space for pupils to think, question, and develop their own understanding.

These habits, formed early, become increasingly important as pupils move through the school.

A continuous academic journey

The curriculum at Rugby School Hanoi is designed as a continuous journey.

From Early Years through to Pre-Prep, and onwards to Prep and Senior School, each stage builds upon the last. Pupils are prepared not only for examinations such as IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate, but for the demands of university and the wider world

At every stage, the emphasis remains the same: academic rigour balanced with breadth, knowledge supported by understanding, and achievement grounded in character.

The purpose of academic life

Academic life at Rugby School Hanoi is not defined solely by outcomes, but by the experience of learning itself.

It is through this experience that pupils develop confidence in their thinking, clarity in their communication, and a genuine engagement with the world around them.

Because at Rugby, education is not simply about what pupils know,
but about how they think, how they grow, and who they become.

And in that sense,
education is without limits.
